festival The 8 day long festival (Thiruvuthsavam) is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram. Utsavabali, a kind of offering is the main ritual of the festival. It used to be booked by the devotees many years in advance. Other special poojas and ritual by the chief priest (thaanthrik functions) will be carried out during the festival. Traditional art forms and cultural programs are performed on the last three days of the festival, which makes the whole season memorable. Arattu (the holy bath) is done in the river of Manali. Panchavadyam is performed on the days of Pallivetta (the holy hunt) and Arattu. Panjagavya Abhishekam Panchagavyam is a mixture of five products from the cow. Milk, Curd, Ghee, Urine of cow and bovine is mixed in a particular ratio to make Panchagavya. It is poured as a libation on the idol during Uchapooja, in the month of Thulam as a twelve-day-ritual. The modern science has identified the medicinal value of panchagavyam as high. It is believed that the consumption of panchagavya results in the removal of physical as well as mental disorders and is an enhancer of Life force energy, Physical strength and life span. It is to be consumed in the fresh stomach, even before drinking water. Devotees often sponsor panchagavya abhisheka as an offering. On the day of Thiruvathira, Kalabhabhishekam is performed. MahaSivarathri As for any other Siva shrine, Mahasivarathri is pretty auspicious for Trikkur Mahadeva temple too. Day long bhajans will be carried out and sayanapradakshinam will be performed after deeparadhana by the devotees to please the lord. At nights, maharudrabhishekam will be done on the idol. Pradosham In this special eve of thryodashi, Lord Siva is believed to dance to make happy, Goddess Sreeparvathy and the whole universe along with. This is the perfect time for the prayers for fulfilment of our wishes. Special pooja and abhishkem with milk will be conducted on the occasion by the Thanthri (chief priest) and the air will be filled with the chanting of the devotees- “om namah:sivaaya”. Illam Nira Illam Nira is usually conducted in the month of Karkidakam. Basically a part of harvest festival, it’s observed for increased prosperity and the well being of people. Thiruvathira This festival is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Shiva. Thiruvathira is the nakshatra or "star" as per the Malayalam calendar of Lord Shiva. Another belief is that the festival commemorates the death of Kamadeva, the Hindu god of erotic desire. It is believed that on this day, the Goddess Parvathi finally met Lord Shiva after her long penance and Lord Shiva took her as a saha-dharma chaarini (equal partner). Both Parvathi and Shiva present this ideal to devotees in the form of Ardha-Nareeshawara (half male, half female form).
